Another Photojournalism Idea - Band Photography

Over the past few days I have been in touch with Daragh Markham, a journalist/writer for Zero Tolerance magazine. I wanted to see if I could tag along with him while he is working with various bands, luckily he said yes.

Markham is happy for me to tag along with him, introduce me to the bands and give access to gigs, them and back stage. He has also promised to contact me when he is travelling to gigs for me to shoot.

This is a solid opportunity that essentially gives me all access to many bands and locations. Which could turn into a good project, next opertunity to shoot I believe is next week.

Mini Photojournalism 'Test' Project - The Warwick Castle

Currently in the middle of doing a mini photojournalism style project where I work based on the people that drink there aswell as the staff that work there.

It is being done in an attempt to create something photojournalistic in order to expand and create depth to this major project.

One thing that does create an issue is 'The camera changes what it records simply by being there' many great opertunites for photographs but soon as the camera comes out, people shy away, pose or become stiff.

None the less I did manage to over come this to a degree by trying to stay out of sight and snapping quick shots, however I did still make people uncomfortable.

Photojournalism

Over the past week I can been on contact with a Journalist working for the Finacal Times, Tim Jones, with the hope of getting some work within the photojournalism community. Unfortunatley theres nothing I can get into or be placed in  at this moment in time, which obviously is not good for a project with a limited time frame.

I will be staying in touch with Tim to see if anything will come up for personal projects and personal portfolio.

However that said I will still be trying to do some photojournalism, starting with where I work. Creating a few mini projects to see if this would be a viable option.

Preliminary ideas

Seeing as this is a very large project it is already time to start researching and looking into ideas for it.

Personally I would like to do something that relates in some way to photojournalism as that is ideally what I would like to go into at the end of Ravensbourne. So far I have come up with two ideas -

Speak to a Journalist friend of mine who works for the FT, see if there is somthing I can get into for this project.

While this will be very difficult, not only in actually getting some quality photographs but also attempting to write a breif that I can actually answer correctly. Seeing as photojournalism by nature is very random, one moment it could be documenting a warzone, next could be London Gangsters.

However even though it is difficult I believe it has the potential to be very good and interesting.

My second idea is band photography, somthing I have done a little published work in before. Which does give me some relativley easy access into various bands, singers and behinde the scenes action.

Though this in itself comes with its own pitfalls, when dealing with people on what can sometimes be a personal level it can become difficult to get some 'real' photographs and not somthing that is staged or posed.

'The camera changes what it captures, simply by being there'

Though again has potential to give a high quality series of work.
